Our Work

What We Do

Jazzwomen and Girls Advocates is dedicated to moving jazz culture toward gender justice with targeted efforts expanding the inclusion and visibility of women and girls in all things jazz. We look at the gender distribution among members of large jazz organizations and their signature ensembles, festival and concert programming, music education programs and jazz faculties from middle school through college. We also look at jazz camps, the jazz press, jazz recordings, radio airplay and more. We act to level the playing field with practical solutions.

With guidance from law firms Equal Rights Advocates, the Liu Law Firm, P.C. and Outten and Golden LLP, we have consulted with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in their adoption of a new hiring process including open job postings and live auditions. This new policy is a first in jazz. We have also played an important role in the sea change that the Monterey Jazz Festival introduced with its 500% increase of women instrumentalists in their 2018 programming. Other exciting new projects are currently in the works.
