Jazzwomen History

International Sweethearts of Rhythm

The International Sweethearts of Rhythm were the top female jazz/swing band of the 1940's, although they don't get as much recognition as Duke Ellington or Count Basie, and were never inducted into the Jazz or Swing Hall of Fame.

In this onstage conversation, members of the International Sweethearts of Rhythm discuss the history of women in jazz and the legacy of the Sweethearts. Founded in 1937, the International Sweethearts of Rhythm was the nation's first, integrated, female big band.
